A Ballsy Approach to Sphere Packing

Comment empiler des oranges de façon optimale ? Derrière cette question en apparence triviale se cache un problème de géométrie d’une profondeur insoupçonnée, dont la résolution complète aura requis près de 400 ans… et l'aide d'ordinateurs.

Dans cet exposé, je proposerai un survol du *sphere packing problem*, un classique néanmoins toujours très riche en questions ouvertes. Nous retracerons d’abord l’histoire du problème et les grandes avancées sur la question. Dans un second temps nous aborderons quelques résultats plus techniques, notamment la formule de la moyenne et le théorème de Minkowski–Hlawka.

How should one stack oranges in the most efficient way? Behind this seemingly simple question lies a deep geometric problem whose full resolution took nearly 400 years... and computer-assisted proofs.

In this talk, I will give an overview of the *sphere packing problem*, a classical yet still enigmatic topic. We will first trace the historical development of the problem and some of its open questions. I will then discuss a few technical results, including the averaging formula and the Minkowski–Hlawka theorem.
