The instability of Stokes waves

This past decade has seen significant progress on the stability problem for Stokes waves, i.e., one-dimensional periodic waves of permanent form traveling with constant speed at the free water surface. I will present numerical and analytical results for waves of small amplitude, before finishing with recent numerical results on waves of near-extreme amplitude.
