Sets avoiding the unit distance in dimension two

We improve the upper bounds on the density of a measurable set in the plane which avoids the unit distance. The proof uses harmonic analysis and combines some old ideas of L. Szekely with some recent ones of F. Vallentin and F. Oliveira Filho.
