Bordeaux hosts the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) in April

From April 9 to 15, 2026, Bordeaux will host the 15th edition of the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), an international mathematics competition bringing together several hundred high school girls from around the world. The event, organized by the association Animath, will not only be the first French edition, but also the first international mathematics olympiad held in France since the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) of 1983.Founded in 2012, the EGMO aims to encourage young girls to pursue scientific studies, to raise the visibility of women in mathematics, and to help combat gender stereotypes. For one week, teams from more than 50 countries will gather in the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Each delegation consists of four high school girls selected in their home country for their high level in mathematics, accompanied by a team leader and a deputy team leader. The competitions, held over two mornings at the University of Bordeaux, feature short but challenging mathematical problems that call above all for ingenuity, original ideas, and elegant proofs rather than lengthy calculations. The week will also be marked by an opening ceremony on Friday, April 10 at 5:00 PM, featuring the traditional parade of teams, and a closing ceremony on Tuesday, April 14 at 5:00 PM, dedicated to the announcement of results and the medal award ceremony. Both highlights will bring all delegations together at the Palais des Congrès.The 2026 edition will mobilize many volunteers, teachers, researchers, and students, in particular to ensure the scientific coordination of the competitions and the support of delegations. The event will also benefit from the backing of academic institutions including the IMB and the University of Bordeaux, as well as numerous public and private partners committed to gender equality in science. For further details, please visit the event website....

The institute of Mathematics of Bordeaux (IMB) is a joint research unit (UMR 5251) of the CNRS, University of Bordeaux and Bordeaux INP.

As one of the two host laboratories for the Doctoral School of Mathematics and Computer Science, the IMB brings together most of the mathematics research conducted in Bordeaux.

The institute of Mathematics of Bordeaux is spread across three sites: in building A33 on the Talence campus of the University of Bordeaux, in the Inria Center at the University of Bordeaux and on the premises of IHU Liryc at the Xavier Arnozan Hospital (Pessac).

The IMB participates in the TransMath Cross-Border Cooperation Laboratory with the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, the University of the Basque Country, and Tecnalia. The IMB is also involved in the France-South Korea International Research Network (FKmathIRN).

For their teaching duties, IMB members are assigned to the following affiliated institutions:
