Outreach

The Bordeaux Institute of Mathematics (IMB) has a rich and varied scientific activity and seeks a high level of openness toward society. It places great importance on the dissemination of all its research themes and on exchanges with all audiences. Outreach activities are presented in various forms.

For all requests regarding interventions, information, or other inquiries, please contact the managers at the address diffusion-contact @ math.u-bordeaux.fr.

Seminar

The outreach team organizes a seminar every other Monday from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM. It takes place in the IMB library but is open to anyone interested.

Our Interventions

For Schools

  • MATh.en.JEANS. Every year, IMB members participate in middle schools, high schools, and universities in MATh.en.JEANS workshops.

  • Moi informaticienne, moi mathématicienne. To increase the appeal of its computer science and mathematics programs among girls, the University of Bordeaux has organized an annual discovery week since 2019 focusing on education, research, and careers in these two disciplines.

  • Circuit scientifique bordelais. The IMB regularly participates in the Bordeaux Scientific Circuit, which generally takes place in October. Middle and high school classes are invited to our premises for workshops, animations, and playful yet instructive presentations.

  • Mathematics Week. Several members of the IMB regularly intervene in middle and high schools across the academy during Mathematics Week, usually in March. Interventions can also be scheduled outside of this dedicated week.

  • Regards de géomètre. This initiative by the “Maths en Scène” association aims to introduce mathematical culture through the artistic and scientific worlds. Several IMB members participate in this program each year by conducting interventions in middle or high schools on themes chosen by the classes.

For Students

  • Les midismaths. This seminar is aimed at undergraduate students in Mathematics, MIASHS (Mathematics and Computer Science Applied to Human and Social Sciences), and Computer Science, starting from the first year. Its goal is to lead the audience to discover the mathematics active in research today. It also strives to show how the concepts taught throughout the undergraduate degree connect to provide meaningful answers to current issues and challenges, whether purely mathematical or stemming from other sciences and disciplines.

Resources

Below are some of our creations. Depending on our availability, we would be delighted to present them and explain the underlying mathematics in more detail to classes or at scientific culture venues. If you are interested, please contact the managers at diffusion-contact @ math.u-bordeaux.fr.

Exhibitions

  • Geometry: a world at full speed. The IMB has produced a traveling exhibition on the geometry of surfaces.

  • Theorems. In collaboration with the FabLab Coh@bit, the IMB created an artistic exhibition of 14 paintings illustrating various mathematical definitions and theorems.

Educational Mini-Apps

  • Addition and Multiplication Tables. A speed game to review your tables and become an expert.

  • Mental Math. A more difficult version of the previous game for the more experienced.

  • Walk in Genus Two. Move using the keyboard arrows through a park drawn on a genus 2 surface obtained by folding a hexagon onto itself. Watch out, there is only one fountain!

  • The Shepard Scale. A circular piano that gives the impression of always rising.

  • The 987. A variant of the famous 2048 game using the Fibonacci sequence. Use the combinations Ctrl+Left and Ctrl+Right to rotate the pieces.

  • The Logistic Map. Navigate the bifurcation diagram of the logistic map. Select an area to zoom in, or use the + and - keys.
